UTFI Reading Series: THE JUMPER OF MAINE

The April 26th reading will be sponsored by the Austin Film Society and will take place at the Austin Studios Screening Room. All readings free & open to the public

Event Date(s) / Time: Sun, 7 Mar, 2010 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Details: In the 1960s the sleeping pill Thalidomide wreaked havoc on fetuses in Europe and led to tens of thousands of stillbirths or multiple birth defects. This TV docudrama is the story of one German lawyer’s struggle against the giant pharmaceutical company that caused this tragedy. This health care issue from the past is still very relevant today in our ongoing debate over health care, insurance companies, and giant pharmaceutical corporations.

Event Date(s) / Time: Wed, 24 Feb, 2010 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM Details: Featuring 16mm projections of Cosas De Mi Vida (1976, 25 min) and Soft Fiction (1979, 55 min) Curated by Caroline Koebel and Scott Stark “Celebrated West Coast filmmaker Chick Strand (1931-2009) passed away this past summer, leaving behind a body of sensual and smart work significant for its exploration of the space between documentary and poetry, truth and fiction, and the politics and pleasure of representation. A key figure in the development of the American independent and avant-garde filmmaking movements, she helped co-found the seminal film exhibition and distribution collective Canyon Cinema in the mid-1960s.
