Green screen technology is the mainstay of movie magic today and drives much of the the special effects that we see in everything from that epic action scene in the latest Hollywood movie to the hilarious commercial we see on TV. Surely, any weather report that you have ever seen on television was produced with blue screen or green screen technology if it involved a weather man standing in front of a weather map.
The basic idea behind green screen technology is elemental. If you videotape a scene with a single colored backdrop (such as a green screen) special filters allow you to make that color transparent so you can replace it with any other video clip or graphic image, giving you the power to superimpose any thing or anyone into that shot. Industry professionals call this technology “chroma key compositing,” and it is used to merge two images or frames together so that the color, or just a small range of colors is removed and therefore made transparent revealing another image behind it. The greatest challenge when setting up a green screen production is the avoidance of shadows. Any shadow cast on the background will manifest itself as a darker color to the camera which means it might not register well for replacement.
